Girls' Bill of Rights

We know girls best! For 25 years our agency has been a pillar in the community, offering programs for young girls and their families. From our beginning as the Big Sisters of York in 1979 we have worked hard to establish ourselves in the community and become a leader in girls’ programming. Our well-known "Big Sister – Little Sister" program and our Little Sister Waiting programs gave girls in the community a place to call their own and a sense of belonging.

As a dynamic agency we recognize that times change and that the needs of girls today is different from their needs 25 years ago. In 2000, we pro-actively began researching other organizations whose mandate focused on girls programming. In 2002, we began the process to become an affiliate of Girls Incorporated® (a multinational organization with over 140 years of experience), and our name was changed from Big Sisters of York to Girls Incorporated® of York Region. This allowed us to implement new and diverse research-based informal education programs that reached more girls in the community. Today, our programs focus on economic literacy, sports, body image, safety, science and technology. This new programming addresses the changing roles of girls and their needs while still maintaining the high standards of excellence in service delivery that this agency has provided for the past 30 years.
